In this special edition of Creative Spirits\, Alyssa will explore the evolution of stained glass\, the intricate craftsmanship behind its creation\, and the delicate\, hands-on work required to preserve these historic masterpieces for future generations. \nThe evening will feature an exclusive look at the recent restoration of one of the historic stained glass windows in the Main House at Planting Fields. Part detective work\, part science\, this hands-on exploration offers a rare window into how naturalists and researchers piece together the stories of the natural world. \nFrom there\, the focus expands to the remarkable adaptations that allow birds to survive and thrive – from specialized beaks and feathers to hunting strategies\, flight patterns\, and unexpected behaviors. As you move through the landscape\, you’ll search for birds and traces of wildlife\, experiencing the estate from a shifting perspective. The walk culminates with a rare opportunity to step inside The Posh Blind — an immersive installation that is often closed to the public. \nBlending science\, history\, exploration\, and outdoor discovery\, this experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with both the natural world and the enduring legacy of curiosity at Planting Fields. Since the Coe family purchased the estate in 1913\, rhododendrons have been a defining feature of the landscape. The Coes delighted in collecting and cultivating some of the most beautiful hybrids of the era\, creating a collection that has captivated visitors for more than a century. \nToday\, the legacy continues. The Planting Fields team and their collaboration with rhododendron experts has led to the restoration\, propagation and expansion of this remarkable collection\, bringing back historic estate-era varieties and introducing hundreds of stunning new hybrids developed by world-class plant breeders. On this tour\, you’ll get an inside look at the work behind the blooms – from rare plants to innovative propagation projects – and learn how these spectacular rhododendrons are cared for and preserved for future generations. Participants will begin with a guided visit to the greenhouse\, learning how plants grow and where food comes from through observation and hands-on engagement. Activities invite participants to explore the colors\, scents\, and textures of fruits\, vegetables\, and herbs in ways that support a variety of sensory preferences and learning styles. \nParticipants will then engage in a structured\, hands-on food science activity focused on creating a nutritious\, energy-rich snack. Opportunities for participation are flexible\, and children are encouraged to engage at their own comfort level. The program concludes with planting vegetable seedlings for participants to take home and care for\, reinforcing the connection between seeds\, growth\, and nourishment. \n  \nDesigned for ages 6+\, this program offers flexible\, sensory-inclusive activities and is welcoming and accessible to participants of all abilities and ages. From there\, the tour passes through the Main Greenhouse and continues toward the Main House\, where additional artworks by Van Aken are on view. \nAlong the way\, visitors will learn about Van Aken’s artistic practice and his commitment to preserving rare and heirloom fruit varieties. The tour also explores how food is more than sustenance—it carries memory\, tradition\, and identity\, connecting us to the farmers\, landscapes\, and communities that have shaped what we eat. \nFollowing the tour\, guests will have the opportunity to create their own collages using botanical prints and nature imagery\, inspired by Van Aken’s grafting practice and related works such as his Tree Tag Grafts. DESCRIPTION:Winter Break Youth Workshop: Backyard Birders \nMonday\, Feb. 16\, 2026\n10am – 12pm\n$25 per child\nCheck-In Location: The Education Center\nThis workshop is for ages 6 – 12 and will take place at the Education Center\, on the Grounds\, and at the Bird Sanctuary. \n  \nRegister Now!\n  \nJoin us for an engaging\, nature-focused workshop designed to introduce young explorers to the remarkable birds that call Long Island home in the winter. Students will explore native winter birds\, including loons\, barred owls\, and turkey vultures. They will engage in hands-on activities to learn about the special adaptations that help these birds survive the winter. Afterward\, we’ll head outdoors for a guided nature walk\, led by Centre Island Bird Sanctuary\, using interactive field guides to identify and count local bird species. We will end at the Bird Sanctuary\, where students will become citizen scientists by collecting data for the Great Backyard Bird Count – a national project that helps track and protect bird populations! \n  \nThis is a drop-off program. Coe Archivist\, Marie Penny\, tour-goers will step into a living legacy\, discovering the Coe family’s passion for horticulture through a historic collection of more than 200 blooming camellias.  \nDesigned by the famed Olmsted Brothers Firm\, the Camellia House stands as one of the most treasured architectural and horticultural gems of the entire Northeast region of the country. Guests will learn about the English traditions of growing camellias under glass\, uncover the fascinating design elements and evolution of the planthouse\, and hear the story of the fire that once threatened this extraordinary collection\, as well as the efforts that saved it.  \nThe experience ends outdoors with a look at the modern hardy camellias thriving in the surrounding landscape. \n  \nMore about First Fridays\nThis monthly series dives into the various themes that make up Planting Fields\, with exclusive behind-the-scenes walking tours and workshops led by Planting Fields Foundation and New York State Parks staff\, who are experts in their respective fields. From wellness and Olmsted landscape features to the life-stories of Coe family members and their unchallenged spectacular horticultural\, historic and personal collections\, participants of this series will see this site with a new lens.
