Include your name\, phone\, and number of people in your party.  \n  \nJoin artist Sam Van Aken\, Planting Fields Foundation’s 2025 Catalyst artist\, for a hands-on introduction to the art and science of tree grafting. Internationally recognized for his Tree of 40 Fruit project – living sculptures that bear dozens of fruit varieties on a single tree – Van Aken is a contemporary artist and Syracuse University professor whose work has been featured at major museums and public sites across the globe.   \nIn this immersive two-hour workshop\, participants will explore the rich history and techniques of grafting\, learn how Van Aken weaves this centuries-old practice into his artwork\, including his recent on-site installation The Planting Fields Stand\, and then try it themselves! Each participant will graft their own apple tree to take home and plant\, creating a living connection to this unique experience. \nCapacity is capped at just 20 participants to ensure an intimate learning environment with direct guidance from the artist himself. Since the Coe family purchased the estate in 1913\, rhododendrons have been a defining feature of the landscape. The Coes delighted in collecting and cultivating some of the most beautiful hybrids of the era\, creating a collection that has captivated visitors for more than a century. \nToday\, the legacy continues. The Planting Fields team and their collaboration with rhododendron experts has led to the restoration\, propagation and expansion of this remarkable collection\, bringing back historic estate-era varieties and introducing hundreds of stunning new hybrids developed by world-class plant breeders. On this tour\, you’ll get an inside look at the work behind the blooms – from rare plants to innovative propagation projects – and learn how these spectacular rhododendrons are cared for and preserved for future generations. From there\, the tour passes through the Main Greenhouse and continues toward the Main House\, where additional artworks by Van Aken are on view. \nAlong the way\, visitors will learn about Van Aken’s artistic practice and his commitment to preserving rare and heirloom fruit varieties. The tour also explores how food is more than sustenance—it carries memory\, tradition\, and identity\, connecting us to the farmers\, landscapes\, and communities that have shaped what we eat. \nFollowing the tour\, guests will have the opportunity to create their own collages using botanical prints and nature imagery\, inspired by Van Aken’s grafting practice and related works such as his Tree Tag Grafts. DESCRIPTION:Winter Break Youth Workshop: Backyard Birders \nMonday\, Feb. 16\, 2026\n10am – 12pm\n$25 per child\nCheck-In Location: The Education Center\nThis workshop is for ages 6 – 12 and will take place at the Education Center\, on the Grounds\, and at the Bird Sanctuary. \n  \nRegister Now!\n  \nJoin us for an engaging\, nature-focused workshop designed to introduce young explorers to the remarkable birds that call Long Island home in the winter. Students will explore native winter birds\, including loons\, barred owls\, and turkey vultures. They will engage in hands-on activities to learn about the special adaptations that help these birds survive the winter. Afterward\, we’ll head outdoors for a guided nature walk\, led by Centre Island Bird Sanctuary\, using interactive field guides to identify and count local bird species. We will end at the Bird Sanctuary\, where students will become citizen scientists by collecting data for the Great Backyard Bird Count – a national project that helps track and protect bird populations! \n  \nThis is a drop-off program. Beginning with a stroll through the Synoptic Garden to highlight featured materials used in holiday decor and ending inside the Main House\, tour-goers will learn about what goes into preparing the 65-room Tudor Revival museum for its festive transformation.  \n  \n\nThis tour will partially take place on gravel and uneven ground in the Synoptic Garden and inside the Main House.  \n\n  \nMore about First Fridays\nThis monthly series dives into the various themes that make up Planting Fields\, with exclusive behind-the-scenes walking tours and workshops led by Planting Fields Foundation and New York State Parks staff\, who are experts in their respective fields. From wellness and Olmsted landscape features to the life-stories of Coe family members and their unchallenged spectacular horticultural\, historic and personal collections\, participants of this series will see this site with a new lens. Each month a new theme is explored with at least one staff expert serving as your guide.
