From there\, the tour passes through the Main Greenhouse and continues toward the Main House\, where additional artworks by Van Aken are on view. \nAlong the way\, visitors will learn about Van Aken’s artistic practice and his commitment to preserving rare and heirloom fruit varieties. The tour also explores how food is more than sustenance—it carries memory\, tradition\, and identity\, connecting us to the farmers\, landscapes\, and communities that have shaped what we eat. \nFollowing the tour\, guests will have the opportunity to create their own collages using botanical prints and nature imagery\, inspired by Van Aken’s grafting practice and related works such as his Tree Tag Grafts. Blending horticulture\, history\, and contemporary art\, this tour invites guests to consider the deeper cultural roots of the fruits we grow and share. \n  \nMore about First Fridays\nThis monthly series dives into the various themes that make up Planting Fields\, with exclusive behind-the-scenes walking tours and workshops led by Planting Fields Foundation and New York State Parks staff\, who are experts in their respective fields. LICM was founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife musicians Eric Huckins and Gergana Haralampieva alongside composer Nick DiBerardino with the mission of making professional classical music of the highest caliber accessible to Long Island audiences. \n \nLICM performs chamber music at local venues across Long Island including concert halls\, parks\, libraries\, churches\, museums\, and community centers. DESCRIPTION:Winter Break Youth Workshop: Backyard Birders \nMonday\, Feb. 16\, 2026\n10am – 12pm\n$25 per child\nCheck-In Location: The Education Center\nThis workshop is for ages 6 – 12 and will take place at the Education Center\, on the Grounds\, and at the Bird Sanctuary. \n  \nRegister Now!\n  \nJoin us for an engaging\, nature-focused workshop designed to introduce young explorers to the remarkable birds that call Long Island home in the winter. Students will explore native winter birds\, including loons\, barred owls\, and turkey vultures. They will engage in hands-on activities to learn about the special adaptations that help these birds survive the winter. Afterward\, we’ll head outdoors for a guided nature walk\, led by Centre Island Bird Sanctuary\, using interactive field guides to identify and count local bird species. We will end at the Bird Sanctuary\, where students will become citizen scientists by collecting data for the Great Backyard Bird Count – a national project that helps track and protect bird populations! \n  \nThis is a drop-off program. Through hands-on experiments and seasonal art projects\, we’ll uncover the fascinating mysteries of autumn. In true Halloween style\, we’ll dissect an owl pellet to discover tiny bones and learn all about what these nocturnal hunters eat. It’s the perfect blend of spooky\, science\, and seasonal fun! \n*What’s an owl pellet? An owl pellet is a small\, oval object that an owl regurgitates after swallowing its prey. It is made up of the indigestible parts of the owl’s food like bones\, fur\, feathers\, teeth\, plant matter\, or insect exoskeletons. What we find in an owl pellet can provide insight into what the owl has recently eaten and can be used to learn about the food chain\, animal anatomy\, and ecology! \n  \nAbout Wednesday Workshops\nThis monthly series of children’s workshops engages students ages 5 – 12 to explore the great outdoors of Planting Fields\, and immerses them in the ecology\, history\, art\, and more of this site.
