The evening concludes with Brahms’ Sonata No. 3\, a profound work of deep expressiveness that ties together the themes of the concert. The purpose of this project is to ensure that Planting Fields remains inclusive\, welcoming\, and easy to navigate for all visitors\, while also restoring the original monumentality\, yet distinctive\, pastoral design as well as elevate their understanding and experience of this vibrant historic site. This project also reimagines key Olmsted design principles at Planting Fields including a unified composition\, orchestration of use and movement\, comprehensive approach\, and sustainable design. \nWe are proud to report that this ribbon cutting signifies the completion of phase two of this three-phase undertaking and would be honored to have you join us to celebrate! \nHome to iconic horticultural collections\, revered architectural marvels\, rare artwork\, and a magnificent 409-acre Olmsted Brothers-designed landscape\, Planting Fields Arboretum Historic State Park has long been a treasured destination both domestically and internationally. While we are proud of the visitation we receive each year – 250\,000 people – we found that there was room for improvement\, restoration\, and a dire need for change to improve the visitor experience. \nDesignated on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979\, Planting Fields is one of the largest extant residential projects ever realized by the Olmsted Firm\, creating a unique opportunity to position our site as a destination. Returning to the original intent of the 409-acre site\, originally created as an integrated composition of the built and natural world\, this project merges careful historic preservation with sustainable design strategies. \n  \nAbout Planting Fields Foundation\nPlanting Fields Foundation strives to preserve and make relevant to all audiences the heritage of Planting Fields\, an early 20th century 409-acre estate\, designed as an integrated composition of the built and natural world. \n  \nFor questions\, please contact Lilly McGurk\, Stewardship Director at lmcgurk@plantingfields.org or (519) 922-8676

Wouters\, President & CEO\, Planting Fields Foundation\nVincent A. Simeone\, Director of Planting Fields Arboretum \n9am Dr. Michael A. Dirr\, “Time-honored Flowering Shrubs: Abelia to Vitex”\nRetired Professor of Horticulture\, University of Georgia \nAbelia × grandiflora is one of many examples of a time-honored\, flowering shrub that weathered/survived the march of garden fashion while experiencing numerous improvements. Why the interest in Abelia × grandiflora? To name a few: fragrant flowers; drought/heat tolerant; early leafing out and late leaf drop (occasionally evergreen); rabbit/deer/insect/disease resistant; and sun/partial shade tolerant. This lecture will discuss the renaissance in time-honored flowering shrubs within Abelia\, Buddleia\, Calycanthus\, Clethra\, Daphne\, Diervilla\, Fothergilla\, Hypericum\, Lagerstroemia\, Loropetalum\, Osmanthus\, Sarcococca\, Spiraea\, Syringa\, Viburnum\, and Vitex. \n10:30 – 10:45am Break \n10:45am Lynden Miller\, “The Joys of Designing with Shrubs”\nLandscape Designer and Author \nCreating diverse landscapes with interesting plant combinations of both herbaceous and woody plants has become a vital part of the multi-seasonal landscape. This lecture will discuss how essential shrubs are to the design of a successful 4-season garden showing examples of combinations from public gardens and landscapes as well as from Lynden’s 40-year-old garden. \n12 – 1pm Lunch at the Haybarn \n1pm Welcome Back\nDonna W. Moramarco\, Director of Horticulture\, Planting Fields Foundation\nVincent A. Simeone\, Director of Planting Fields Arboretum \n1:15pm Dr. Michael A. Dirr\, “Forward Thinking: Advances in Hydrangea Breeding\, Development\, and Introduction”\nRetired Professor of Horticulture\, University of Georgia \nHydrangeas have a long\, rich history in the western world dating back to the late1700’s. Through the 20th century hundreds of new introductions of Hydrangea macrophylla have appeared. Along with the H. macrophylla advances\, breeders took aim at H. arborescens\, H. paniculata\, H. Quercifolia\, and H. serrata. Hydrangea genes have been shuffled like cards resulting in plants never considered possible. Hydrangeas have become one of the most cultivated and recognized plants. This lecture will celebrate the importance of this iconic genus in the American landscape. \n2:15pm Vincent A. Simeone\, “Thinking Outside the Box: Selecting Alternatives to Common Evergreens”\nVincent A. Simeone\, Director of Planting Fields Arboretum \nThere are many tried and true landscape evergreens such as Rhododendron and Azaleas\, Arborvitae\, Cherry Laurel\, Leyland Cypress\, Mountain Laurel\, Holly\, Pine\, Spruce\, and Viburnum. These popular mainstays offer reliable aesthetic value and versatility\, but some are overused\, resulting in a monotonous\, vulnerable landscape with little to no diversity. This lecture will offer some more modern and underutilized genera of broadleaved and coniferous evergreens as well as lesser-known species and cultivars of popular genera we know and love. Special emphasis will be put on proper selection\, pest and deer resistance\, specific care and maintenance\, landscape function and benefits. \n3:30pm Closing Remarks\nVincent A.
