The Fun of Fall: A Seasonal Guide to Planting Fields

The fall foliage at Planting Fields never looked so good! To help you plan your next visit, we’ve created a guide to our top five seasonal to-dos and events.

1. Pick up a pair of binoculars and go birding

Planting Fields is a sanctuary for our feathered friends! Make sure to stop by the Wedell Bird Sanctuary and Costich Gardens, and walk through the trails (of which there are six miles!) to observe these avian creatures. View trail map.

2. Admire a centuries old artistic landmark (pictured above!)

The Carshalton Gates are magnificent and larger than life. Nestled amongst the fall foliage, they take our breath away every time. Take the one mile walk from the Main Greenhouse and see them for yourself.

3. Explore one of Long Island’s historic Gold Coast homes

Learn about the socialite and philanthropist family that resided here seasonally. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the various walking tours that take place on the grounds – new information is constantly being discovered! Book your tour of Coe Hall now.

4. Be amazed by autumnal blooms

You may think that fall is a desert for colorful plants – think again! Dahlias, beautyberry, and goldenrod are just a few of the bright and beautiful blooms you’ll find on our grounds. Don’t forget to visit the Main Greenhouse to get a taste of the tropics!

5. Events all season long

We love celebrating each and every season at Planting Fields, and this fall we have a full line-up of exciting programming to keep you fully engaged, including butterfly releases, presentations, the Fall 5K, festivals, and more! See all upcoming programs here.
