Now Announcing: Catalyst 2026: Fragment of the Foundations for a Babel Tower by Fiona Tan. ⁠

Inspired by the myth of the Tower of Babel and the tradition of the garden folly, Tan has imagined the remnant foundations of a tower within the landscape of Planting Fields – a structure that appears both in the process of being created and, at the same time, in ruins. ⁠
⁠
We invite visitors to wander its pathways and contemplate themes of communication and the human desire to build shared understanding, and how those efforts can be both ambitious and fallible. ⁠
⁠

Hanging above the fireplace in the Great Hall is a portrait of three young Coe children. At first glance, you might assume the youngest is Natalie, the Coe family’s only daughter. But there’s a fascinating surprise: all three children are boys, and the portrait was painted before Natalie was even born. ⁠

So why is young Henry dressed so differently from his older brothers? ⁠
⁠
The answer takes us into the fascinating history of children’s fashion at the turn of the 20th century, when clothing traditions for young children looked very different from what we know today. ⁠

🌿 Why are there grassy mounds in the Oudolf Garden? ⁠

With just a little more than one month to go until the unveiling of the Oudolf Garden, the transformation is well underway. The plants are filling in, the historic Rose Arbors have been restored, the benches are in place, and the central mounds have been covered in fresh sod. ⁠

But why lawn? ⁠

Landscape Curator Peter Slothower takes us behind the design of these unexpected grassy domes and explains how they will create places for visitors to pause, take in the surrounding meadow, and give the eye a moment of rest amidst the garden’s abundance of flowers and grasses. ⁠

This Labor Day, we’re celebrating the many hands, minds, and hearts behind Planting Fields.⁠
⁠
This has truly been a year of labor at Planting Fields, and in every sense, a labor of love!⁠
⁠
In the first photo: Collections & Exhibitions Manager Emily Leger, Horticulture Manager James Franco, and Facilities & Grounds Technician Tony Bologna are the hands behind Fiona Tan’s Fragment of the Foundations for a Babel Tower. Together, they have handled 4,000 bricks that compose this extraordinary work, helping bring the artist’s vision to life through careful planning, coordination, and craftsmanship. Fragment opens to the public October 17. More details coming soon!⁠
⁠
In the second photo, Maintenance Technician Sal Lanzilotta gives the Circular Pool some TLC, and is the team member responsible for the recent repairs to the piping around the Blue Pool Garden.⁠
⁠
And in the final photo, Planting Fields Foundation staff, volunteers, and NYS Parks staff come together to build something entirely new: the Oudolf Garden, also opening October 17 to the public.⁠
⁠
From bricks to blooms, pools to pathways, so much of what happens here is made possible by people who show up, get to work, and care deeply about this place.⁠

This Labor Day, we’re grateful for every one of them! 💚
