This #womenshistorymonth, we remember two women who played a huge role in how Planting Fields became what we know it as today: Mai and Caroline, W.R. Coe’s second and third wives respectively, who both loved flowers. Mai was partial to parma violets though she took time to pose with the rambling roses of the Blue Pool Garden in 1921. Caroline favored roses – here she is seen circa 1950 in the rose garden next to the Manor House – which was built exclusively for her use.⁠

On this day 70 years ago, W.R. Coe passed away. A few years prior, in 1948, he was awarded an honorary law degree from the University of Wyoming for his many contributions to the state of Wyoming. He’s seen here at Planting Fields with Milward Simpson, a senator and later governor of Wyoming, who also served as a trustee of the university. ⁠

Join Planting Fields Foundation President & CEO, Dr. Gina Wouters, along with Abbey Chamberlain Brach of Hollyhock House and Sean Sawyer of Olana State Historic Site, for a free virtual discussion on "Contemporary Art in Historic Spaces" tomorrow, Thursday, March 13 organized by the American Friends of Attingham. ⁠

Through our Catalyst program launched in 2020, Planting Fields Foundation commissions artists to create work in dialogue with the site. W.R. and Mai Coe were patrons of the arts inviting leading American artists such as Robert Winthrop Chanler, Everett Shinn, and Samuel Yellin to create integral artwork for the site in the 1910s. Catalyst continues the Coe legacy of artistic patronage, aiming to preserve the spirit of Planting Fields while breathing new life into it. ⁠

We've all heard about the lost art of handwriting, but what about the lost art of shorthand? This month we highlight #ArchivesHandwriting with a page from Marguerite Pettet’s notebook. Pettet was W.R. Coe’s longtime secretary who devoted her life to his business endeavors. She learned the art of phonography – which uses symbols to represent the sounds of words – at the Heffley Institute in Brooklyn in 1918. ⁠

Our winter witch hazels are a sign that spring is on the way! These colorful spider-like flowers show up at the tail end of winter, when little else has begun to bloom outside on the grounds of Planting Fields. You can find these springtime harbingers in the Synoptic Garden, just outside of the Azalea Walk, and along the walkway to the Carshalton Gates.
