Member Preview – Exhibition Tours in Coe Hall – 7/8

July 8, 2020 | 10:00 am4:00 pm

The Electrifying Art and Spaces of Robert Winthrop Chanler features decorative screens and panels from private collections throughout America, highlighting Chanler’s depiction of frenzied worlds from the early 1910s to the late 1920s. Creator of the Buffalo Mural at Coe Hall and the original Lace Room (Mai Coe’s bedroom), Chanler is best known for his immersive interiors and screens that adorned the most exclusive estates of the early twentieth century. Visitors will learn about his work in the context of the artistic developments in America in the early 20th century, his relationship to the wealthy patrons of the Gilded Age, and the preservation challenges presented by the Buffalo Mural in Coe Hall.. Gain a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the screens and their design function within the homes of the elite, while glimpsing Chanler’s eccentric persona and the characters around him throughout his life.   Detail above right: Leopard and Deer (Death of the White Hart), 1913, Rokeby Collection, New York.
