The American Chestnut: To Blight and Back

Our Panorama series hosts Dr. Bill Powell, Professor and Director of the Council on Biotechnology in Forestry at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Dr. Jared Westbrook, Director of Science at the American Chestnut Foundation, and Michelle Fitzgerald, Assistant Curator of Homewood Museum and Evergreen Museum & Library at Johns Hopkins University as they share the harrowing story of how the American Chestnut went from one of the most common trees in the North Eastern United States, to a rare and threatened species. Through genetic engineering, a promising future for the American Chestnut has been made possible after nearly 30 years of research. Learn about the history of this once ubiquitous tree, and how modern technology has ensured a promising future.
