Following in the Footsteps of Maria Sibylla Merian
July 22, 2020 | 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

How can you catch a glimpse of a butterfly? Native plants are the key. Learn about how to create a butterfly garden at home, and learn about the dynamic history of art and science pioneer Maria Sibylla Merian. Explore the life and work of this 17th Century female entomologist, who held a successful career as an artist and scientist in a time when women rarely held such roles. In 2018, Shinichi Nakahara, an entomologist who studies Neotropical butterfly systematics, was part of the team that discovered an unnamed butterfly from Panama, which was later named Catasticta sibyllae in honor of Maria Sibylla Merian. Shinichi will shine light on the life and work of Merian, and speak about his work and how the Catasticta sibyllae got its name. We’ll also be joined by Cheryl Bennet and Jenn Cappello-Ruggiero of the North American Butterfly Association, who will share how we might all walk in Merian’s footsteps of observation and illustration after creating a butterfly garden of our own.
