Birds of America: Identification, Ornithology and Community

September 16, 2020 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Bird watching is one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities in the US, with millions of people identifying as bird-watchers or “birders”. Can you identify the birds that visit your yard and window sills? Join this Panorama series program for a virtual conversation with with Jennifer Wilson Pines, Past President and Conservation Chair of the North Shore Audubon Society and Sheridan Alford, environmental educator on bird identification and the study of ornithology. Peggy and Sheridan will provide helpful tips to make bird identification simple and enjoyable, while sharing insight and expertise on the study of ornithology and its community of explorers.

Sheridan Alford, environmental educator, is pursuing her Master of Science degree in Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies at The University of Georgia, with a special focus on environmental outreach and education. Her field experiences have taken her across the American South, and her current research topic includes an assessment of African-American interest in bird watching as an outdoor recreational activity. She is an organizer behind the online movement, Black Birders Week – its goal is to first and foremost initiate visibility and representation in the field, but also to uplift and recognize Black birders, and support diversity of the bird-watching community.
