At the turn of the twentieth century Long Island’s North Shore was the most prized residential area of the United States. This was where captains of industry and financial titans built lavish estates on the bluffs and bays across from the shoreline of New York City where they worked. With Long Island Sound literally in their backyards the Astors, Morgans, Goulds, Roosevelts and Vanderbilts commissioned fast, luxurious yachts which they used for everything from commuting to the city to racing and voyaging. Dr. MacKay’s presentation explores this extraordinary world of fabulous boats, many of which were built on the Island.

This lecture is offered in conjunction with the exhibition “Sporting Life on Long Island: The Great Estates Era” which will be open before and after the Sunday lecture, and continues daily through October 1^st.  Robert B. MacKay, a North Shore sailor who remembers some of the last of the great yachts, received his doctorate in American and New England studies from Boston University in 1980 and has written extensively about Long Island country houses and commuting yachts.
