Restoring an English Country House of the Gold Coast

August 20, 2020 | 7:00 pm8:30 pm

A little slice of the English countryside, right here in Oyster Bay: that was the vision and inspiration of W.R and Mai Coe as they created Coe Hall and Planting Fields. Explore all the ways the Coes, and their neighbors, built English country homes using innovative materials and salvaged artifacts to give their spaces an air of old world authenticity. Join Kurt Hirschberg from Jan Hird Pokorny Associates in a discussion about the allure of English country homes across the Gold Coast in the early twentieth century and the restoration of the West Portico, poised to begin in August.

The West Portico of Coe Hall is one of the most striking architectural features at Planting Fields, designed by architects Walker & Gillette and built by Cauldwell Wingate Company of New York between 1918 and 1921. In 2019, the West Portico and the surrounding area was closed to our patrons due to large pieces of limestone breaking away from the building.
