Spotlight Talk: Sweethearts at Sea: Love, Life, and Loss in the Age of Whaling
August 14, 2019 | 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
$20 – $30Join Amanda Goodheart Parks for a fascinating discussion about whaling life and marital norms in the 1840s, when a small group of married couples defied tradition by going to sea together. Inspired by our exhibition, From Pursuit to Patronage, this lecture will chronicle the history of American whaling and its connections to the Coe family before shifting to a remarkable couple, Captain John and Elizabeth Marble and their incredible story of love, loss, and life at sea. Refreshments will be served.
Dr. Parks has studied the history of whaling for more than a decade. With undergraduate degrees from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI and a M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amanda has an extensive career working as a public historian, museum educator, and historical interpreter. She is currently working on a book about the history of love and marriage in New England whaling communities. Take a moment to view our exhibit and enjoy complimentary wine & cheese before the discussion.
