Asian Cultural Festival, Daytime Performances & Activities

The grounds surrounding Coe Hall will feature traditional Chinese performances and artists. 2:00 PM Performance: The Art of Face Changing by Li Ping Zhang, followed by Humor acrobatic performer Xiao Di Yang. 3:30 PM Music Across the Map: a performance by young musicians of the Ischool of Music and Art. All daytime performances and activities are included in the $8 parking fee.

2022 Asian Cultural Festival

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Planting Fields is excited to share details on our first Asian Cultural Festival taking place on Sunday, May 22. A planning committee that includes leadership from the Long Island Chinese American Association (LICAA) has developed a dynamic lineup of events that celebrates the rich heritage of Asia. From East to West, A Concert Celebrating the Music of Asia and the Pacific

5:30 - 7:00 PM From East to West: This ticketed concert will feature acclaimed musicians, celebrating both folk and modern songs from Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. You must arrive after 4:45 PM in order to avoid the $8 parking fee. Curator Led Tour of Coe Hall

Join Planting Fields Foundation’s Director of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator, Meredith Brown, on the last Friday of each month for an exclusive tour of Coe Hall, covering Planting Fields history and the Foundation’s collections, and learn about what it takes to care for the collections of a historic house museum and its landscape. Planting Pride 2022

Planting Fields Foundation is thrilled to host our first-ever PLANTING PRIDE FESTIVAL! Celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and its past, present, and future at Planting Fields, we’re excited to gather on Saturday, June 11 at our beautiful 409-acre estate to enjoy a packed day of food, learning, and fun. Local vendors, artists, non-profit organizations, and performers will be on hand to demonstrate their support for the queer community on Long Island. Member After Hours – Heather Garden Walk

Learn about our newly restored historic Heather Garden with Planting Fields Foundation’s Historic Landscape Horticulturist Donna Moramarco. Inspired by W.R. Coe’s travels to the English Moorlands where heather thrives in abundance, the renowned Olmsted Brothers landscape architectural firm created Coe’s vision in 1924 with this unexpected, formal landscape feature cradled between a forest and lawn. Oyster Bay Music Festival – For the Birds – A Musical Odyssey Inspired by our Feathered Friends

On July 2 at 2 pm, the Oyster Bay Music Festival (OBMF) will be bringing For the Birds – A Musical Odyssey Inspired by our Feathered Friends to Coe Hall. Mai and William Coe were avid bird enthusiasts, and OBMF will present a program which draws upon the history of the Coe’s love both of music and birds. The program will include Firebird by Stravinsky/Agosti transcribed for piano, selections from Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals, Abyss of the Birds by Messiaen, The Nightingale’s Song by Ukrainian composer, Kos-Anatolsky and more! Breaking Boundaries: Performed by Long Island Chamber Music

Join us for a string quartet concert featuring music by living female composers breaking boundaries in the classical music field. A Ramble with Frederick Law Olmsted

Performing Artist of Living History Joseph Smith will portray Frederick Law Olmsted as part of the celebration of the bicentennial of his birth in 1822. The performance will highlight his early life and education, his various careers as clerk, sailor, farmer and journalist, his travels and journey to becoming the "Father of American Landscape Architecture". Decisive Moments at Planting Fields Exhibition Opening

As part of our Olmsted 200 programming at Planting Fields, the new exhibition, Decisive Moments at Planting Fields: The Photography of Mattie Edwards Hewitt and Frances Benjamin Johnston honors Mattie Edwards Hewitt (1869 – 1956) and Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864 – 1952). W.R. and Mai Coe engaged these pioneering female landscape photographers to document the Olmsted-designed gardens as well as the buildings and interiors of Planting Fields. Hewitt and Johnston ultimately defined the field of landscape and architecture photography in the early twentieth century. Symposium: Situating the Residential Projects of the Olmsted Firm

This major two-day symposium brings together experts in the fields of landscape architecture history and practice to examine the residential projects of the Olmsted firm, spanning from 1857 to 1979. What’s Out There Weekend: Olmsted on Long Island Reception

Planting Fields Foundation is proud to partner with The Cultural Landscape Foundation to bring you a weekend of exceptional Olmsted experiences. In addition to compiling a guidebook of Olmsted-designed sites on Long Island, this partnership also brings the opportunity to participate in private tours of the sites listed in the new publication. Tour sites include public parks such as Caumsett State Park, Bayard Cutting Arboretum, and Cold Spring Harbor Lab, as well as unprecedented access to privately owned Olmsted-designed sites including cemeteries, waterfront private estates, and other sites that are not usually accessible to the public.
