The Great Backyard Bird Count

Planting Fields will serve as a host for the National Audubon Society’s Great Backyard Bird Count, taking place February 18 – 21. This nationwide effort asks local communities to aid local bird populations by spending time outdoors, counting, and submitting findings. Your participation gives scientists the data they need to protect dwindling local species.

Camellia Festival

Join us for the Planting Fields Camellia festival taking place in the stunning Camellia greenhouse, which was a collaborative design between Lowell & Sargent and the Olmsted Brothers. Enjoy live musical performances as you take in the blooming glory of Camellia sinensis and learn from experts about its unique botanical history, ecological significance, and enduring charm.

Backyard Birding Tour

Join us for a birding tour on the grounds of Planting Fields in partnership with Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary and their expert guides! Spot and learn about local birds while helping scientists collect data during the National Audubon Society’s Great Backyard Bird Count.

Join Chief Curator Meredith Brown for a first look at our spring exhibition, Fashioning Desire: The Art of Gerda Wegener. Approximately 60 artworks by Danish artists Gerda Wegener (1886 – 1940) and her spouse Lili Elbe (born Einar Wegener, 1882 – 1931) will be integrated into various rooms throughout Coe Hall, alongside a selection of art and ephemera from the Planting Fields Foundation collection. A contemporary of W. R. and Mai Coe, Gerda Wegener’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau paintings and drawings quickly garnered attention in 1920s Paris, where she lived and worked. Asian Cultural Festival, Daytime Performances & Activities

The grounds surrounding Coe Hall will feature traditional Chinese performances and artists. 2:00 PM Performance: The Art of Face Changing by Li Ping Zhang, followed by Humor acrobatic performer Xiao Di Yang. 3:30 PM Music Across the Map: a performance by young musicians of the Ischool of Music and Art. All daytime performances and activities are included in the $8 parking fee.

2022 Asian Cultural Festival

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Planting Fields is excited to share details on our first Asian Cultural Festival taking place on Sunday, May 22. A planning committee that includes leadership from the Long Island Chinese American Association (LICAA) has developed a dynamic lineup of events that celebrates the rich heritage of Asia.
