Experience a revolutionary evening where history, identity, and performance take center stage!
Join Planting Fields Foundation and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for a special evening honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States and celebrating the revolutionary spirit that continues to shape our nation. From a captivating historical reenactment and thought-provoking author conversation to a complimentary book signing and a high-energy drag performance hosted by Thorgy Thor (RuPaul’s Drag Race), the evening brings together history, storytelling, and contemporary expression in a vibrant celebration of revolutions past and present!
Enjoy cocktails and conversation as the evening opens with a captivating reenactment by Joseph Smith portraying General Baron von Steuben. The performance explores both von Steuben’s military legacy and his identity as a gay man navigating the complexities of 18th-century society, tracing his journey from Prussia to the American Revolution, where he helped transform the Continental Army into a disciplined force.
Building on this powerful exploration of history and identity, the evening transitions into a dynamic panel discussion featuring author Josh Trujillo and illustrator Levi Hastings, the creative team behind Washington’s Gay General. This compelling graphic novel reexamines the life of Baron von Steuben, blending historical research with vivid, contemporary storytelling. Each attendee will receive a complimentary copy of the book and will have the opportunity to meet the authors during a signing.
The evening culminates in a high-energy drag performance celebrating modern revolutions in culture, identity, and visibility. Hosted by Thorgy Thor (RuPaul’s Drag Race), a Brooklyn, New York performer who now tours internationally with her genre-blending Thorchestra shows, the lineup features Tom Catt & Toni Homeperm, Tiffany Piffany, Alisha Day, Alice Noir, Awhora Borealis, and Annie Manildoo, talented performers from Long Island who bring local pride, artistry, and vibrant expression to the stage.
Blending history with contemporary expression, Planting Pride: Revolutions on the Runway honors the past while celebrating the voices and movements shaping today’s America.
