Planting Fields is thrilled to welcome Sam Van Aken (@samvanakenstudios), internationally acclaimed artist and our 2025 Catalyst artist, for our first-ever living art exhibition, “The Planting Fields Stand”. Four multi-grafted fruit trees tell the layered story of our site, from Matinecock agricultural roots to the Coe family estate, and nod to the future of biodiversity. 🌳✨ ⁠

Throwback to Week 2 of the Youth Leaders Program!⁠

Our Youth Leaders were busy making a real impact across Planting Fields — they:⁠
🌿 Maintained and enhanced the Education Center landscape — removing invasives, tidying up sensory beds and the veggie garden, and planting 4 new shrubs to create a safety barrier at the Playscape.⁠
🌹 Helped care for two historic landscape features: the Rose Arbor and the Blue Pool Garden.⁠
🔍 Created and facilitated a scavenger hunt for our summer camp participants.⁠
💪 Rolled up their sleeves in our native forest, removing invasive plants to help protect this unique ecosystem.⁠
⁠
We’re so proud of the dedication, teamwork, and creativity these students bring to the program each week!⁠

W.R. Coe wasn’t just an outdoorsman, he also had an eye for fine art! In 1913, he added "The Backgammon Players" by Adriaen van Ostade to his personal collection. This 17th-century painting captures a group of everyday men, mid-game, in a dimly lit tavern, a classic example of Dutch Golden Age storytelling through art. ⁠

While the Rose Arbor is most known for its stunning display in June, during mid-to-late summer, you can find this path filled with colorful blooms, including the panicle hydrangea you see here. Known for its massive cone-shaped flower cluster, these gorgeous blooms are cold-hardy, low-fuss, and endlessly charming! ⁠
