Conversations in Coe Hall: “Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America” with Laurence Cotton

Join us on September 17 at Planting Fields to experience an illustrated presentation on the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed designer of Central Park and founder of the landscape architecture firm that shaped Planting Fields. Writer, public historian, filmmaker, and consulting producer on the nationally broadcast PBS special “Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America,” Laurence Cotton will present an information-rich and entertaining talk about Frederick Law Olmsted’s life, career, and legacy and will present a mini-travelogue of select Olmsted landscapes across North America designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. and sites—like Planting Fields—designed by his sons and the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm. Before the presentation, guests will be led across the designed landscape by Gina J. Wouters, Executive Director of Planting Fields Foundation, who will speak about significant landscape areas at Planting Fields and their historical context. Come learn about this extraordinary legacy of a Renaissance man, view an Olmsted Brothers designed landscape, and discover why Olmsted’s philosophy, writings, and designs are still so relevant today.
